Can You Really Forgive and Forget?

Updated: Jun 15, 2023

Atmosphere Although the bride and her entire crew of six bridesmaids walked down the aisle with dresses for mid-summer, the atmosphere was warm, welcoming and happy; the way you feel the day you leave for your summer holiday! She was a masterpiece and that masterpiece warmed our hearts. The master of ceremonies was one of the best! The wine was divine and the company even better! A lot of our family were also invited and some close friends too which was great for all of us! The pastor was a blessing. I think what I loved the most was his ‘smart casual’ attitude while explaining the importance of a marriage. I don't know if this only happens to me or every other woman out there, but when you hear the message about marriage you realize every single time "Wow! How could I forget?”

God's Message During the ceremony, the pastor gave a couple of pointers to the couple. One that really stood out for me was when he said that we must forgive but also forget. The message behind this is that when we forgive we should not keep a book where we have written it all down, only to pick it up later! When we say we have forgiven we must really mean that we have forgiven and forgotten! We should let yesterday stay in yesterday, because it can't change our today or our tomorrow!

Be Honest How often do we say something doesn't bother us anymore? How often do we pretend that we are fine with something, but we are not? How often do we say, “It’s fine.”, but we don't forgive’ we don't forget! This wedding was just a reminder of something we already know and it stayed with me: don't go to bed angry, look after what you have. What you have is what has taken you and your husband to where you are today. With or without children!

Realise The Future I think it is time we stop looking at what has been done to us and start looking at what has been done for us! God loves us and because of His love for us He sent His only son to die on the cross, for us! I think it's time we carry our own crosses and if it is hard to forgive, know that through Christ you can do anything, and He will teach you to forgive. Only with His help can we have a forgiving heart!

Always remember, He wants what is best for us, today, tomorrow and all the days to come! Yesterday lies in the past, we can't go back or do it differently, but we can build a better tomorrow, alongside our life partners, just the way God intended! We are not perfect, but our living God is, and He has shown us that it is possible to forgive and forget.

Matthew 6:14-15 If you forgive others the wrongs they have done to you, your Father in heaven will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive the wrongs you have done.
